Mott MacDonald appointed on Guyana highways scheme

UK-based Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the government of Guyana to work on the upgrade of the Linden-Lethem road, one of the country's key transport links with Brazil.

The road's upgrade to a highway is listed as one of the Guyanese government's highest priority projects and forms part of a larger initiative to develop road infrastructure between Guyana and Brazil with a view to fostering development links between the two countries.

Mott MacDonald will conduct a prefeasibility study to assess the current state of the 438km section of the roadway connecting Linden in Guyana's north with Lethem on the Brazilian border. The study will propose a series of alternatives for the road's reconstruction and improvement.

The Linden-Lethem segment is part of the longer Georgetown-Lethem roadway which is strategic to the Guyanese government's plan to improve connectivity and transport between Guyana's north and south regions. Its current condition varies from excellent all weather laterite to a narrow, seasonally inundated track only passable by four-wheel drive vehicles.
