Atkins wins major highways projects

Atkins, the UK's largest engineering consultancy, will undertake detailed design and development of two major improvements to the UK's strategic road network worth in total more than £150 million, and provide management and maintenance services for 1300 kilometres of trunk road and motorway.

Atkins, in joint venture with Jacobs, will design the M74 'missing link' - a five-mile section of new motorway in Glasgow which is part of the strategic link from the West Coast of Scotland to England. It will deliver faster and more reliable journey times, and open up new business opportunities while providing integral infrastructure for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Atkins is also designing the A14 upgrade between Ellington and Fen Ditton - a congestion busting measure on this key trunk road. The 40km stretch of road in Cambridgeshire carries between 65, 000 and 85, 000 vehicles a day and provides the link between the UK's largest container port to the Midlands and the main motorway network.

Finally, Atkins has been appointed by the Highways Agency to act as the single Managing Agent Contractor (MAC) on motorways and trunk roads throughout Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk, and Norfolk. It's the first ever such appointment for the HA and will run for five years, with a potential extension to 2015. It will involve the company providing integrated highway management and maintenance services on almost 1300 km of road.
