TRC supports the Long Island cable replacement project

This spring TRC will complete a nearly decade-long cable replacement project that will serve as a vital link between electric generating stations in Connecticut and Long Island. In February, the C/S Nexans Skagerrak, one of the world's most advanced cable-laying vessels, began to float out the first of three new underwater 138kv cables to replace the cable system that once linked a station at Manresa Island in Norwalk and the Northport Power Station on Long Island, a distance of approximately 12 miles.

The former cable system, which consisted of seven self-contained, fluid-filled (SCFF) cables, was installed nearly 40 years ago and was at the end of its life cycle, operating under consent orders associated with leaks of dielectric fluid into Long Island Sound.

In 2005, TRC was asked to provide environmental services as part of a team submitting a bid to Nexans Norway, AS, the manufacturer and installer of underwater cable systems worldwide.
