| Erick van Egeraat presents projects at MIPIM The renowned Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat presents seven of his most outspoken projects at MIPIM real estate fair in Cannes. All projects are represented by physical models, specially built for the event. In the Siberian City of Khanty-Mansiysk, Erick van Egeraat is presently working on a series of new projects, including a Masterplan to guide the city's future development, a landmark 83 m (32.000 m²) five star hotel tower and business centre, a 500.000 m² Retail and Entertainment Centre, and a Chess & Billiard club which will host the 2010 World Chess Championship. Erick van Egeraat's Masterplan for Khanty-Mansiysk is the first step in realising the city's ambitions to establish itself as regional business centre, attracting international investment, and form a hub for tourism in Siberia. Erick van Egeraat draws inspiration for this redevelopment from the compactness of European cities. His plan reinforces the city centre by increasing urban density, concentrating a wide range of functions and introducing a network of pedestrian links throughout the downtown area, thereby increasing interaction and circulation downtown. In 2005, Erick van Egeraat started to work in another Siberian city, Surgut. Located alongside one of the city's main boulevards, Trade and Entertainment Centre Vershina combines retail spaces with a rollerdrome, skateboarding facilities, indoor rock climbing, dance studios, restaurants, bars and an underground nightclub. The 35.000 m² building is currently under construction and will be completed at the end of 2008. Vershina II is a 58.000 m² mixed-use development located next to the Vershina Trade and Entertainment Centre. With this second development, client SKU will accommodate high-quality office space and a hotel. Other functions include shops, cinemas, an indoor tropical garden and a casino. Vershina I & II will be connected underground. In September 2007, Erick van Egeraat made breaking news with the presentation of his plans for Federation Island, a 330 ha artificial archipelago, located off the coast of Sochi in the Russian Black Sea. In the meantime, the project has been approved by the Krasnodar regional government (The Krasnodar regional government is this year's main sponsor of the MIPM real estate fair). Construction will start at the end of 2008. Federation Island offers residences, hotels, cultural, leisure and recreational facilities. The archipelago will be built in the shape of the Russian Federation and reflects the country's major geographical features. The project is being developed by M-Industry Group of St. Petersburg. Erick van Egeraat's design for the National Library and Headquarters for Ak Bars Bank in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, distinguishes itself with its approach to inner-city redevelopment. Designed as a covered extension of the centre, the 81.000 m2 development links the existing Hermitage Park, the new library park and the adjacent Tukay square. Erick van Egeraat thus transforms the area into a vibrant hub of Kazan city life. The project is a cornerstone in the urban redevelopment of Kazan and sets an example for other urban regeneration schemes throughout the Russian Federation. In London, Erick van Egeraat is working on one of Europe's largest urban regeneration schemes. Developed by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC), Erick van Egeraat's Masterplan for Canning Town aims to regenerate one of London's prime areas for urban revitalisation. It will focus on social and economic infrastructure integrated with key spatial reconfigurations and urban design principles.
