Atkins ranks first in Middle East

Design and engineering consultancy Atkins has been ranked top of the UK consultancy firms active in the Middle East according to trade journal New Civil Engineer (Feb 2008). With a turnover of £93m, Atkins employs 2,308 staff across offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Manama (Bahrain), Doha, Safat (Kuwait), and Muscat Oman.

Current major projects in the region include the design and programme management of the civil works for the Dubai Metro red and green lines. The flagship transportation project is an architectural and engineering showpiece and will offer an efficient, environmentally friendly and convenient form of transport in one of the most advanced cities in the world.

In Manama, Atkins is architect and engineer for the Bahrain World Trade Center, a pioneering stride for environmental architecture. The building is the first in the world to incorporate large scale integrated wind turbines which will generate up to 15% of the energy requirements of its two towers.

Atkins' other projects in the region include the Burj Al Arab – the tallest all suite hotel in the world. Atkins was asked to design and deliver a hotel that would be instantly recognized as an architectural icon. What followed was five years of design and build activity, resulting in a technically challenging, aesthetic masterpiece that has thrust Dubai forward onto the world stage and, even today, stands as a measure of excellence and innovation.
