| Halcrow Yolles project wins 2007 Ontario Concrete Awards A Halcrow Yolles project has won an award at the 2007 Ontario Concrete Awards, The University of Toronto's Leslie Dan Pharmacy Building has received the Specialty Concrete Applications award. Halcrow Yolles provided full structural engineering services for the innovative Leslie L. Dan School of Pharmacy building at the University of Toronto. Described as a 'sunlit cathedral of glass and black granite' the iconic building is at the pinacle of architectural and engineering design. The University asked for a dramatic landmark structure that would be architecturally daring, maximise lecture hall and assembly space and protect the views of the neighbouring historic buildings. With external surfaces of glass, the lower levels of the 12-storey building are transparent. This has enabled the creation of dramatic five-storey light-filled glass atrium with floating "pod" lecture halls and assembly space. Through the use of the pods, a light steel rod suspension system and innovative engineering techniques, the University's objective of effectively using all space was met without compromising the visual surroundings. The two silver-coloured pods are suspended in mid-air by steel rods. The larger and lower pod houses a 60 seat lecture theatre and reading room which opens to the expanse of the Atrium. The higher pod houses a smaller 24 seat computer training centre and faculty lounge on its roof. write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Construction News :: home page |
