WSP wins bridge design competition in Tampere, Finland

WSP Finland has won a design competition involving the new Laukonsilta Bridge in Tampere with a proposal called 'The Glockenspiel'. In second place was an entry called 'The Fishbone', also by WSP Finland. The Laukonsilta Bridge will serve pedestrians and cyclists between the districts of Ratinanniemi and Laukontori in Tampere, Finland.

The Laukonsilta Bridge will provide a connection for pedestrian and bicycle traffic between the city centre and the Ratina Stadium as well as improving access to the city centre from the new Ratinanranta housing estate. The bridge across the Ratina Strait will be 195 metres long. The plan is to start building the bridge in the autumn of 2008, which would allow the bridge to be in use as early as 2009.

The entries to the Laukonsilta competition are on display in the customer information centre at Frenckellinaukio 2 B in Tampere from 27 November to 14 December 2007.
