| CDM wins DBIA awards CDM (Cambridge, Massachusetts) has been honored with two awards by the Design-Build Institute of America. The first is for the design and construction of the 5-million-gallon-per-day South Region tertiary treatment plant (SRTTP) at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California, which won the Design-Build Excellence Award in the "Water/Wastewater Over $15 Million Category." The second, winning the National Design-Build Award in the "Water/Wastewater Under $15 Million Category", was for the Coastal Development and Environmental Improvements Project in Budva, Kotor, and Cetijne, Montenegro. The design-build approach allowed for the completion of the Camp Pendleton SRTTP within budget and ahead of an aggressive schedule, requirements that would not have been possible with a traditional design-bid-build model. CDM implemented state-of-the-art processes to treat effluent for water reuse, including an innovative sequencing batch reactor technology. The flexibility of the new plant allows for consistent, high-quality wastewater treatment through variations in influent flow rates and with minimal operator attention. Concerns for the environment, endangered species, odor-control, and aesthetics were all addressed throughout the course of the project. The infrastructure improvements in the coastal area of Montenegro accommodated increased tourist visits (17 percent in one season), improved employment opportunities, and generated $5.5 million of construction-related income. The design-build process made it possible to simultaneously complete 16 geographically diverse projects in 22 months. The new system addressed impending health threats, improved the environment, and provided overall enhancements to the region's water supply. In addition, CDM facilitated community participation by involving stakeholders in the project. The collaboration boosted public confidence and contributed to the timely and economical delivery of project components. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Construction News :: home page |
