Dragados Offshore will construct the world's largest oil drill ship

Dragados Offshore, S.A. will construct the world's largest oil drilling, processing and storage ship in its facilities at Puerto Real (Cadiz) for the Norwegian MPF Corp. This pioneer project valued at 220 million euros is expected to provide this company, which forms part of the ACS Group's Industrial Services area, with a workload to last through the end of 2009.

The Spanish company will be responsible for detail engineering and for manufacturing and installing the equipment on the ship's hull required to extract and store crude oil, ranging from drilling to generation modules and including the installation of propulsion equipment and the performance of all testing of the equipment and of the ship at sea.

In order to be able to undertake this new contract work at its plant in the Bay of Cadiz, Dragados Offshore will carry out the works required for the construction of a new 300 metre long dock with a draught of 12 metres, allowing for the docking and mooring of the ship. The ship's hull is being constructed in Dalian (China), and will be tugged to Puerto Real once it is completed in September 2008.

The extraction, processing and production ship-platform will be 300 metres long, 50 metres wide and 27 metres high, and will have the capacity to store 1,000,000 barrels of crude oil. The company MPF, which will hire out the vessel to oil companies and plans to manufacture new units in the future, requires the ship to have the capacity to operate anywhere in the world, including in the middle of harsh environments such as the Artic waters, given its hull and installations which are capable of resisting temperatures of 30º below zero.
