John Holland to construct sewers in Melbourne

Australian construction contractor, John Holland announced that it has been awarded a $301 million contract to construct Stage One of the Northern Sewerage Project by the Melbourne Water Corporation. The project will involve the construction of 8km of tunnelled sewers in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne to meet growing commercial and residential capacity demands as the population swells.

The sewers will range in size from 1.6 - 2.5m in finished diameter. Five major access shafts of up to 65m in depth and 13m in diameter will also be constructed, enabling two specially designed tunnel boring machines to be utilised during construction.

First announced by Victoria's then Water Minister in August 2005, the Northern Sewerage Project is a Melbourne Water initiative of state significance. Construction work is expected to commence shortly and this first stage of the two-stage project is due for completion by 2012.

This is the first project to reach construction stage under John Holland's six year agreement with Melbourne Water to provide tunnel construction services. The Northern Sewerage Project will combine the specialist capabilities of John Holland's Tunnelling division together with the company's Southern Region.
