PBS&J executive addresses hot topics in transportation

Critical issues face Southern California today—not the least of which is the transportation system. Taxpayers and businesses alike are demanding shorter drive times, improved infrastructure, better use of transit, reduced greenhouse emissions, and increased public safety. PBS&J, an international architecture, engineering, and construction firm with offices throughout California, made its internationally renowned expert Bob McQueen, C.Eng., MICE, available to talk about how Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can offer advanced solutions and breakthroughs to these and other transportation issues.

ITS encompasses a broad range of wireless and wire-line communications-based information, control and electronics technologies. When integrated into the transportation system infrastructure, and in vehicles themselves, these technologies help monitor and manage traffic flow, reduce congestion, provide alternate routes to travelers, enhance productivity, and save lives, time and money.

Story Ideas:

* Smart Highways: what's next? Close interaction between vehicles and infrastructure have always been at the heart of ITS. What will the "next generation" look like—in San Diego, Los Angeles, California, and the nation?

* Toll Roads: new Choices for Congestion Relief. There's a toll road in Orange County. Should there be more? Toll roads have the potential to close the funding gap while improving traffic flow. Are toll roads right for Southern California?

* TransNet Dashboard: how it's keeping SANDAG and Caltrans accountable? As the trustees of the public's money, SANDAG and Caltrans, have initiated an aggressive effort to design and build several critical highway and transit projects quickly. To update the public regarding these key projects, the agencies developed the TransNet Dashboard, an Internet communications tool that provides real-time online information on such crucial items as project budgets, cost estimates, and schedules.
