Schindler introduces next generation of elevator technology

Schindler Elevator Corporation showcases its groundbreaking new Schindler ID human interface system this week at The BOMA International North American Commercial Real Estate Congress being held in New York City. Schindler ID, the next generation of destination-based elevator technology, is the first elevator control system for mid- and high-rise buildings that customizes service for each passenger using electronic identification badges.

Schindler ID enables building owners and managers to seize unprecedented control of elevator traffic via a simple, intuitive tenant interface that personalizes elevator access and significantly reduces time to destination. Unmatched in its ability to grant and prohibit access to specific floors, Schindler ID minimizes waiting times; improves traffic handling by 30 percent over conventional systems; and incorporates unique, ADA compliant, handicap assistance features. By identifying passengers using an electronically readable device, Schindler ID personalizes the elevator trip according to passenger needs and access requirements.

Schindler revolutionized the elevator industry with the introduction of the first generation of destination dispatch technology, the Miconic 10 system. Simply put, Miconic 10 replaces the pushbuttons in the elevator with keypads in the lobby. Passengers program their destination floor in the keypad, and the brains of the elevator groups passengers by destination and assigns the most efficient elevator for each person. Passengers' wait times and repeated stops are reduced, energy efficiency is achieved and overall elevator performance is improved.

Now, with Schindler ID, destination dispatching goes to a whole new level. Schindler ID customizes service further by identifying passengers using a badge, PIN code, key tag or other electronically readable device that is programmed with personal details. The system then assigns an elevator car that conforms to their needs – including handicapped, VIP or limited-access passengers – and takes them to their destination even more efficiently, allowing or limiting access to various floors depending on building requirements. Not only does the smart elevator know in advance where the passenger needs to go, it also knows who the passenger is and personalizes the trip accordingly.

Perhaps the most compelling element of this seemingly complex technology is the simplicity of the user interface. Building occupants use their electronic ID badge or other device, while security-cleared visitors simply enter their desired floor on the interactive visitor touch terminal in the lobby. From there, the system customizes the elevator ride saving passengers time while also minimizing the power consumption of the system. In addition, Miconic 10/Schindler ID systems are compatible with most building security systems and all code-mandated emergency operating modes.
