Earth Tech's automated people mover wins engineering award

Earth Tech Inc., a business unit of Tyco International Ltd., and a global provider of consulting, engineering and construction services, has earned an Award of Merit from the Consulting Engineers of Ontario. The award recognizes Earth Tech's engineering excellence of the Automated People Mover (APM) at Canada's busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International.

The APM system, which began operation last July, is a versatile transportation system that replaced a fleet of buses to provide reliable, higher capacity, convenient, efficient and environmentally-friendly transportation of passengers between airport terminals and remote parking lots.

In the future, the APM will also provide access to airport developments, including a proposed rapid transit link from Pearson International Airport to downtown Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area transit system.

Earth Tech's team led the successful planning, design and general review during construction of the APM system, which included three stations and 1,610-foot (1,473-meter) dual elevated guideways. To date, the APM system is the longest application of the Doppelmayr Cable Car ropeway technology, with the highest travel speed of 26.8 mph (43.2 km/h), and the first application of its kind in Canada.
