Corus to participate in launch of new Boeing Dreamliner

Corus Engineering Steels (CES), based in Rotherham UK, announced its participation in the launch of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner. Through its long-term contract with Messier-Dowty, a direct supplier to Boeing, CES is providing high strength, remelted steels for the aircraft's landing gear components. Corus' remelted steels are used due to their ability to withstand the significant, safety-critical pressure that the landing gear are subjected to every time a Dreamliner takes off and lands on the runway.CES also supplies specialised steels, which are able to withstand extremely high temperatures, to Rolls-Royce for use in Dreamliner engines.

CES is part way through a multi-million pound investment programme to further develop its facilities to better meet aerospace customers' current and future needs. Its Stocksbridge plant has doubled its remelting capacity over the past few years to meet growing industry demand, and continues to enhance its finishing facilities.

The 787 aircraft's environmental credentials fit well with CES' steelmaking process route. CES uses the Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking process, recycling 1.5 million tonnes of steel scrap each year, making it the largest steel recycler in the UK.

Corus is Europe's second largest steel producer with revenues of £9.7 billion and crude steel production of 18.3 million tonnes in 2006, primarily in the UK and the Netherlands.
