| Santiago Calatrava's Chicago Spire will be built Dublin-based Shelbourne Development Group, Inc. announced that The Chicago Spire received approval from the City of Chicago Planning Commission. The iconic building has been designed by internationally renowned architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. It will be the tallest building in the USA and Europe and the tallest exclusively residential building in the world. Work on the site is due to start within the next month and the apartments will be marketed by UK-based Savills (L&P) Ltd, who are acting as consultants and international sales and marketing agents, starting this summer. Completion will be by 2010. The Chicago Spire will house 1,200 apartments over 150 storeys. It will be located on a 2.2 acre site at 400 North Lake Shore Drive, where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan. Because of the unusual shape of the building, no two residences will be the same. Each apartment is expected to be large although detailed designs of internal layouts and prices have not yet been finalised. These will be announced within the next few months. The approved plan features several improvements to earlier designs that will enhance The Chicago Spire’s integration with the surrounding environment, including a spectacular four-story transparent glass lobby, an underground parking garage for residents and a one-acre landscaped public plaza. In addition, The Chicago Spire will be engineered to meet the gold standard of LEED certification, which dictates among other things that rainwater be recycled for landscaping treatments, river water be used for cooling and special glass be included to protect migratory birds. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Construction News :: home page |
