Iberdrola presents project for bioethanol plant

Iberdrola presented the construction project for the bioethanol production plant of Barcial del Barco (Zamora), which will require an investment of 108 million euros. Construction of the Ecobarcial plant is framed within the objective set by the EU and ratified by Spain in the Renewable Energies Plan to cover 5.75% of hydrocarbon consumption by transportation using biofuels in 2010. This new facility will be completed in July 2008.

The project will be promoted and operated through the company Ecobarcial, jointly owned by Proencalsa at 51% (90% Biovent [95% Iberdrola], 8% Collosa and 2% the Ente Regional de la Energía); by Green Source at 30% (Sniace); by Ecoteo at 14%; by the Instituto Tecnológico Agrario de Castilla y León at 4.9% (ITACYL); and by CORECCAL at 0.1% (a group of 18 cooperatives from the regional community).

Ecobarcial will hire approximately 250 people during plant construction – which will be handled by Elecnor – and 54 people when it is operating. Indirect employment could reach 8000 workers.
