Beazer Homes says FBI statements should not have been made

Atlanta-based Beazer Homes USA, Inc. has responded to statements made by the representative of FBI on the possibility of a federal investigation of the company in connection with alleged mortgage fraud. "Beazer Homes has been in contact with the U.S. Attorney's Office and, at this time, there have been no allegations of any wrongdoing," the company said in a statement. The homebuilder has received a request for documents generally relating to its mortgage business.

The Charlotte Observer reported last week that the company had an unusually high rate of foreclosures in many developments around North Carolina's largest city. Beazer Homes said that the allegations by the Charlotte Observer focused primarily on one Charlotte subdivision, Southern Chase. In that subdivision, Beazer Mortgage Corporation originated the loans for the borrowers and served as a broker, not a lender.

Beazer said internal investigations have found no evidence to support the claims in the newspaper's articles. According to the company, the U.S. Attorney's Office told the company that "the statements by the FBI and published by Business Week were not authorized and should not have been made."
