DHV wins reconstruction project in Indonesia

The BRR, Indonesia's Agency for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, which is charged with the reconstruction of Aceh and Nias - both areas devastated by the tsunami and earthquakes - has awarded a US$ 5 million consultancy contract to DHV, a Netherlands-based engineering and consulting firm, and a consortium of Indonesian companies, including MLD, DHV's Indonesian subsidiary. Nias is an island off the coast of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean and has a population of about 700, 000. Three months after the tsunami of 26 December 2004, the island was hit by an earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter Scale.

DHV is responsible for coordinating the reconstruction of the infrastructure on the island of Nias, which is 120 km long and 40 km wide. The project involves primarily roads and bridges, but also urban development, drinking water, waste water, drainage and harbors. Apart from the coordination and engineering work related to the infrastructure - valued at US$ 100 million - the project also focuses on the institutional development of (government) organizations.

The project is a grant to Indonesia from the Multi Donor Fund for Aceh and Nias. After the European Union, the Netherlands provides the largest contribution to this fund, namely US$ 173.5 million.
