Acciona Water to build Carlsbad desalination plant

Acciona Water has been chosen by US company Poseidon Resources Corporation to design, engineer, build, and start up a seawater desalination plant in the California city of Carlsbad; the plant will be the largest of its type in the USA. The new Carlsbad desalination plant will cost 300 million dollars and produce 204,000 cubic metres of high-quality drinking water per day. The Carlsbad plant will be among the five largest of its type in the world and will be the largest in the USA, practically double the size of the Tampa, Florida plant that currently holds the US record and has just been completely refurbished and will be operated by a joint venture comprising Acciona Water and American Water.

Acciona Water and Poseidon plan to complete the design and final contracts in June 2007 and then commence construction, with a view to bringing the plant into production in 2009. The plant is designed using the latest energy saving and recovery technology and complies with California's strict environmental standards.

San Diego County is undertaking an ambitious plan to diversify its water sources by promoting water saving and seeking alternative sources such as desalination and reutilisation. With this set of measures, the region plans to attain a substantial reduction by 2030 in the energy used to ensure its water supply.
