Acciona to build tunnels on the Atlantic high-speed railway line

Acciona Infrastructure is part of the consortium that has been awarded the contract to build two tunnels on the Vigo-Das Maceiras (Pontevedra) section of Spain's Atlantic high-speed railway line. The project involves digging two 5.9 kilometre-long tunnels with a diameter of 9.5 metres, using a tunnel-boring machine. The project, worth 183 million euro, will take 47 months to complete.

The new tunnels will be located on the first section of in the municipalities of Vigo and Redondela. The Atlantic high-speed railway line will run from El Ferrol to the Portuguese frontier, passing through La Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo.

The twin tunnels will commence with cut-and-cover tunnels. At the Vigo end, these tunnels will run under the A-9 toll road, which will be diverted temporarily to enable construction to proceed. The tunnel will also run under the airport road. Continuing from the cut-and-cover tunnels, a section will be dug using the Belgian method, after which a tunnel-boring machine (TBM) will be used to dig from Das Maceiras towards Vigo; the second tunnel will then be dug.
