| Zumtobel to build new plant in the north east of England The UK-based lighting manufacturer Thorn, a brand of the Austrian Zumtobel Group, is to build a new production facility in Spennymoor in the north east of England. The appropriate planning permission was granted at the beginning of the year by the local authorities in Spennymoor. The move will involve transfer of production operations from the plant in Merrington Lane that Thorn has occupied since 1952, to a new site in Green Lane in Spennymoor. Thorn, which originated in the Electric Lamp Service Company founded in England by Jules Thorn in 1928 and was taken over in 2000 by the Zumtobel Group, is now one of the world's leading high-quality suppliers of professional indoor and outdoor lighting. Thorn is the UK market leader, with an output of over 4 million light fittings per annum. The new plant in Green Lane will cover 40.000 sq. m of floorspace. Development is planned to begin in February 2007, with production start-up scheduled for the spring of 2008. Following the transfer of production to Green Lane, the Merrington Lane site is to be sold off by the Zumtobel Group. As the local authorities have already confirmed, the site will be redeveloped for housing. Development is due to commence in 2008, once the new Thorn premises are operational. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Construction News :: home page |
