Acciona operates in the rail freight transport sector

Acciona Rail Services has met all the administrative requirements necessary to operate in the rail freight transport sector with the concession of the safety certificate by the Railway Infrastructures Administration authority's (Adif) board of directors. The company is now able to begin operations, which it plans to do in late January, by virtue of the contract signed with Unión Fenosa to transport coal from the port of Gijón to the electric company's thermal power plant in La Robla (León).

Starting up the company has required an investment of nearly €12 million, aimed primarily at acquiring mobile equipment that it will use in its first contract with Unión Fenosa. Thus, Acciona Rail Services now has two locomotives and 33 hopper cars that will enable it to begin transporting coal in late January. The duration of the contract is five years, which may be extended by an additional five years.

The daily transport capacity of the Acciona Rail Services convoy is of around 700 tonnes of coal, which is equal to nearly 600,000 tonnes per year, and will make it possible to withdraw over 80 lorries from the highway per day, resulting in a reduction of costs and pollution.
