HDR project receives two top Iowa ACEC awards

The Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA) is doing its part to help make south Des Moines a more attractive place to live and do business, and has received honors for doing so. The project won the Grand Conceptor award, the first-place overall award from the Iowa chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies. It also received the Grand Place (first-place) award in the Special Projects category.

The WRA operates a regional wastewater reclamation facility (WRF) in southeast Des Moines on the banks of the Des Moines River. When originally built in the 1980s, the WRF was situated in an area that was primarily rural. Des Moines has grown and the once sparsely populated region is becoming urbanized, creating urgency to reduce offsite odor impacts. Des Moines hired a team of experts headed by HDR to prepare an Emissions Reduction Study and Report.

The urgency is compounded by plans under way to create an "Agrimergent Technology Park" adjacent to the WRF. This business park will target value-added agricultural research and production companies and should play a major role in economic development. Plans also include construction of the nearby Martin Luther King/Southeast Connector roadway, which will become a primary corridor into downtown Des Moines, and extension of the popular Greater Des Moines River Trail system.
