Strabag builds proton therapy center in Essen

Austrian-based construction group Strabag gave the go-ahead for construction to start on the Westdeutsche Protonentherapiezentrum Essen (WPE). Within three years the largest public health sector public-private-partnership project in the country will be realised in the Essen University Hospital grounds. Subsequently, the first patients will be able to receive ion proton radiation treatment – a new, innovative cancer therapy treatment which in Germany is to date only used in research. Following the successful rehabilitation of two schools in Witten, this is Strabag’s second PPP-building project in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Striba Protonentherapiezentrum Essen GmbH – a property company especially established by Strabag Projektentwicklung GmbH of Cologne and IBA Ion Beam Applications S.A., Belgium, is responsible for planning, construction, financing and operation of the therapy centre. The company leases the proton facility to Essen University Hospital for a period of 15 years, after which it becomes the property of the hospital.

Reinhold Keil, Commercial Director of Essen University Hospital, estimates costs for planning, construction, technical facilities, servicing, maintenance and financing over the full duration of the contracts at approximately 300 million Euros.
