| Morphosis won competition for ’Phare’ tower in Paris The jury of the international architecture competition launched by Unibail - the largest property owner at La Défense, with property assets of around 600,000 m² - in partnership with the EPAD (The Public Body for the Development of La Défense), chose Morphosis (Thom Mayne) as winner of the competition to design the "Phare" tower at La Défense, to be delivered in 2012. Thom Mayne's project pays tribute to La Défense's two landmark buildings – the Cnit and the Grande Arche. It is a monumental, 300-metre high tower, offering almost 130,000 square meters of usable area. Flexibility is the keynote of the design, with public spaces including a belvedere and restaurant facilities on the higher levels over the office floors. As a crowning feature, wind turbines on the roof will provide some of the electricity required to operate the building. This feature reflects the environmental approach of Morphosis, which also plans a double-skin facade providing natural ventilation and particularly energy-efficient features. One of the major criteria of the competition was good integration in the existing site. The project preserves the very open vista between the Faubourg de l'Arche and the Cnit, to which it is directly linked. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Construction News :: home page |
