Rugby star makes his mark on Hexham's new hospital wing

England and Newcastle Falcons rugby star Jonny Wilkinson tried his hand at a new skill - stone-laying - when he was invited to celebrate the start of work on the latest phase in the redevelopment of Hexham General Hospital in Northumberland.

Jonny, who is a local sporting hero in the north-east, was asked by Catalyst Healthcare and its client, Northumbria Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust, to lay a foundation stone commemorating the construction of a £24 million extension to the Private Finance Initiative funded hospital, which opened in July 2003.

The new extension is being built by Bovis Lend Lease on the site of the original Hexham Hospital. It will provide a primary care centre to serve two of the town's general practices, a 10-bed emergency care centre, a chronic disease centre, education centre and 30-bed hospital ward, taking the inpatient capacity to 138 beds. The 8,000 square metre extension will open in August 2008.
