Balfour Beatty and Amec JV chosen by National Grid

Balfour Beatty has been appointed as preferred partner by National Grid for a new five-year alliance contract, likely to be worth approximately £550 million. The contract is to upgrade and develop the electricity transmission network in the eastern half of England. There is an option to extend the alliance for a further five years. The alliance contract, which is part of one of the largest procurement exercises undertaken by National Grid, will support their increased investment in the electricity transmission network and contribute to long-term security of supply.

The works are required to connect new infrastructure such as wind farms and new generation plant to the Grid. The contract, which will come into force in April 2007, is one of two overhead line and four sub-station alliances announced by National Grid.

Meanwhile, a joint-venture between Amec, Babcock International and Mott MacDonald, has been appointed by National Grid as the preferred partner for the West Overhead Lines and Cable Alliance, which will carry out the upgrade of overhead power lines and underground cables across the western half of England and all of Wales.

The contract will be worth £500 million (AMEC’s share: £237.5 million) over an initial five-year period, after which the contract may be extended for a further five years. As part of National Grid’s expenditure of up to £2.8billion on alliances to improve the electricity transmission network, the joint venture’s work will enable new infrastructure such as wind farms and other new electricity generation plant to be connected to the grid and will cover enhancement and replacement of existing assets.
