Chavez announced new railway project with Italian contractors

The Republic of Venezuela is to assign a new railway construction project to the consortium formed by Astaldi, Ghella and Impregilo on an equal 33.33% ownership basis. The new project, worth 1.7 billion dollars, was announced by the President of the Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, during the inaugural ceremony for the 2.5 billion dollar Caracas–Cua line built by the same Italian consortium. President Chavez announced the intention of assigning a new railway programme to Astaldi, Ghella and Impregilo, to continue the line along the 123 km Cua-la Encrucijada-San Juan de los Morros section.

Work is expected to begin in early 2007.
