| Barajas Airport in Madrid won RIBA Stirling Prize Barajas Airport in Madrid, designed by Richard Rogers Partnership, has won the 11th RIBA Stirling Prize in association with The Architects' Journal. The presentation of the UK's premier architectural award took place at a glittering awards ceremony in London on Saturday, October 14, 2006. This is the first time a Richard Rogers Partnership building has won the prize. Jack Pringle, RIBA President, announced the winner and Isabel Allen, Editor of The Architects' Journal presented Richard Rogers with the prize and a cheque for £20,000. Barajas Airport beat off stiff competition from five other outstanding contenders: Brick House, London - Caruso St John Architects; Evelina Children's Hospital, London - Hopkins Architects; Idea Store, Whitechapel, London – Adjaye/Associates; National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff - Richard Rogers Partnership; Phaeno Science Centre, Wolfsburg, Germany - Zaha Hadid Architects and Mayer Bohrle Freie Architekten BDA, Germany. This is the eleventh year the RIBA Stirling Prize has been presented. Last year's winner was The Scottish Parliament, designed by EMBT / RMJM. The following winners of the RIBA Special Awards were also presented at the ceremony this evening: Holly Barn, an upside-down new-build barn in Norfolk for a client who uses a wheelchair, by Knox Bhavan Architects won the Manser Medal sponsored by The Architects' Journal for the best one-off house designed by an architect in the UK. Wrap House, an origami-roofed extension to an Edwardian house in London by Alison Brooks Architects won the Stephen Lawrence Prize sponsored by the Marco Goldschmied Foundation for the best example of a building with a construction budget of less than £1 million. The Royal Botanic Gardens won the RIBA-Arts Council Client of the Year Award for their programme of masterplanning and new building. The award annually rewards the vital role a good client plays in the creation of fine architecture. The Idea Store, Whitechapel by Adjaye Associates won the RIBA Inclusive Design Award in association with the Centre for Accessible Environments and Nicholls & Clarke, which celebrates inclusivity in building design. The National Gallery's East Wing + Central Portico by architects Dixon Jones with Purcell Miller Tritton won The Crown Estate Conservation Award. The prize is awarded to the best work of conservation which demonstrates successful restoration or adaptation of an architecturally significant building.
