| Luminaire manufacturer Thorn receives order for Beijing Airport The UK-based lighting manufacturer Thorn, a brand of the Austrian Zumtobel Group, has received a major order worth €3 million from Beijing Capital Airport Expansion Project Headquarters to provide lighting for the airport extension. This is the largest order Thorn ever received in China and goes to underline the key significance of the Chinese market for the Zumtobel Group. The airport extension is one of Beijing's major infrastructural projects for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. The extension will add a third terminal covering 420,000 m² to the airport, which is expected to handle an extra 25 million passengers per annum. The specification for the extension involved a number of prominent architects, including the UK's Lord Norman Forster, and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD). The Thorn supplies will cover the lighting of the new Terminal 3 buildings. Thorn will be supplying some 70,000 luminaires. Deliveries are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2007, with completion anticipated later that year. The fittings delivered by Thorn will be used to light the new buildings that together make up Terminal 3: T3A (domestic flights) and T3B (international flights). Thorn will also be supplying the lighting for the Ground Traffic Centre. Today the Zumtobel Group operates three production plants in China. The newly built factory in Guangzhou, Southern China, which opened in 2005, specialises in professional indoor lighting. Its products are primarily destined for the Asian market, while some will be fed through to Australia and Europe. The Guangzhou facility will be manufacturing the luminaires for Beijing Airport. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Construction News :: home page |
