Safer road side furniture helps to save drivers' lives

The passive revolution's test crash demonstration, held on 28th September at Bentwater Parks in Suffolk, successfully demonstrated how innovative crash-friendly road side furniture (signs, gantries and lighting columns) is helping to save drivers' lives.

The demonstration, sponsored by InterRoute – the Mott MacDonald and Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services (formerly RCS) Joint Venture – included a remotely controlled car crashing into a traditional road signpost at 60mph and a car driven by a stunt professional at 60mph into a new-technology Lattix sign-post. The vehicle driven into the traditional signpost was a complete write off but the vehicle driven into a Lattix sign-post was still in a safe condition and the stunt driver walked away unscathed.

The demonstration was attended by transport experts responsible for England’s motorways as well as a representative from Transport Scotland, the newly formed agency of the Scottish Executive which is responsible for the management and maintenance of Scotland's Trunk Roads. George Henry stated Transport Scotland has committed £1 million from its Strategic Road Safety Programme to deliver “crash friendly” roadside improvements. England’s Highways Agency has introduced guidance to ensure that “crash friendly” roadside furniture is installed as older equipment is replaced.
