Bouygues subsidiary starts work on rapid rail link in South Africa

Bouygues Construction's subsidiary Bouygues Travaux Publics is to start the civil works for the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link. This follows the signing of the concession contract by Bombela with the Province of Gauteng.

Bombela is an international consortium comprising Bombardier Transportation, Bouygues Travaux Publics, Murray & Roberts and Strategic Partners Group.

Totalling 1.2 billion euros (Bouygues Travaux Publics share: over 550 million euros), the works will take four-and-a-half years and be performed in two stages: the first section will link Sandton and the Johannesburg International Airport and the second section will run between Pretoria (Hatfield) and Johannesburg.

This 80-kilometre rail system comprises 15 kilometres of tunnels, 11 kilometres of viaducts and bridges and 10 stations (three of which are underground).

On completion of the civil engineering works, Bombardier Transportation will deliver the core electrical and mechanical systems, including a fleet of vehicles. RATP Developpement will be the main shareholder of a company set up alongside its South African partners to operate and maintain the network for 15 years.
