Latest trends in production technology in Stuttgart

On 20th and 21st September 2006 the strongest research location for production technology throughout Europe – the Universität Stuttgart with its associated institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft – will jointly present latest trends and results for the first time at the AMB, the leading trade fair for metal working.

During its 40 years of history, the "Colloquium on Production Technology" (FtK) has been developing into an important platform of discussion for scientists and users from industry, giving "Stuttgart Impulses" for a "Production Technology for the Future" in accordance with its motto. This year the FtK will be held for the first time at the Messe Stuttgart during the AMB.

Extremely thin ceramic coatings (flexible, lightweight and yet highly strong!), innovative machines which do not carry the tools to the workpiece but the other way round, transformable factories as well as reconfigurable machine tools and production facilities (which can be set for new numbers of pieces, new variants or completely different products within a few hours!): these and many other new developments and trends in production technology will be presented at the FtK of the Stuttgart Institutes for Production Technology.

Comprising 700 scientists, Stuttgart is the strongest research location for production technology in Europe. Institutes such as the "Institute for Control Engineering of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Units" exist only here in Stuttgart. Owing to its "Institute for Laser Tools", which has developed a diode-pumped thin disc laser, the Universität Stuttgart is world-class in this field. Furthermore, the "Institute for Manufacturing Technologies of Ceramic Components and Composites" conducts internationally pioneering research. In the German rankings, the Stuttgart Faculty of Mechanical Engineering as a whole always takes an excellent position in research and teaching.
