| Eurostat publishes statistics on construction in the EU In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production grew by 2.7% in the euro area and by 1.9% in the EU25 in the second quarter of 2006, compared to the previous quarter. In the first quarter of 20064, production fell by 0.1% in the euro area and rose by 0.1% in the EU25. Compared to the second quarter of 2005, output in the second quarter of 2006 gained 3.4% in the euro area and 3.0% in the EU25, after increases of 1.7% and 1.3% respectively in the first quarter of 2006. The most significant increases were recorded in Estonia (+13.6%), Poland (+11.5%), Germany (+10.6%), the Czech Republic (+9.1%), Slovakia (+8.6%) and Slovenia (+7.2%). The only decreases were registered in Portugal (-4.8%) and Hungary (-4.3%). Building construction rose by 2.2% in the euro area and by 1.7% in the EU25, after increases of 1.0% and 0.9% respectively during the first quarter of 2006. Civil engineering grew by 2.7% in the euro area and by 0.8% in the EU25, after decreases of 2.4% and 1.3% respectively in the previous quarter. The largest increases were recorded in Estonia (+33.5%), Lithuania (+19.0%), Slovakia (+17.0%), Latvia (+16.1%) and Poland (+12.8%).
