Arup appointed to develop second phase of Tate Modern

Six years after the opening of London's Tate Modern, Arup and Herzog & de Meuron have again joined forces to develop disused sections of the old power station. The purpose of the program is to create a new gallery to complement the Tate Modern.

When complete, the new development on the south side of Tate Modern will provide 60% more gallery space and provide a route through the building, connecting the City, (over the Millennium Bridge) with Bankside and Southwark.

By transforming massive underground oil tanks into a 400 seat auditorium and informal performance spaces, the engineering team continues an Arup exemplar of practice - focusing on the advantages of the site conditions, rather than being bound by its constraints.

Arup will also apply its expertise in internal environmental design to achieve the optimum internal conditions for the galleries, applying low energy and sustainable methods where possible. Methods adopted to date in the design, include re-using waste heat from the EDF Energy Switch House and installing energy piles connected to the building structure, which keeps the frame at a similar temperature to the ground, moderating hot and cold weather conditions.

The Tate Modern extension are scheduled to be complete in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
