GTZ Proklima Workshop at IKK 2006

The Proklima programme of the Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) supported by VDKF e. V. and IKK Messe- Wirtschafts- und Informationsdienste GmbH is to organize a Workshop on Marketing Refrigeration Systems through the Kyoto Protocol during the 27. IKK – International Trade Fair Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Ventilation on 19 October.

About 800 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects have been implemented throughout the world in the past years and have created Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) worth over 1 billion euros. Energy efficiency projects are well represented here with 56 % of these CDMs. The sale of Certified Emission Reductions can often distinctly reduce the investment barriers. Depending on technology and efficiency gain, 10 to 30 % of the investment costs can be covered by CERs.

The potential of CDM has been rather theoretical until now – it was too expensive as a single refrigeration plant only creates a few hundred CDMs. The cost of preparation and monitoring has now dropped appreciably, as the Kyoto Protocol Executive Board has established a provision for "small-scale CDM". This provides for an unlimited number of refrigeration plants to be combined into one or more "bundles" and submitted as ONE CDM project.

The essentials for CDM in the refrigeration sector will be presented and dealt with in depth in the subsequent discussion:

- Procedure and risk factors for refrigeration CDM
- Possible development of volumes and prices of certified emission reductions
- Influence of refrigerant substitution
- Market assessment based on example of Brazil and India

The workshop is primarily intended to acquaint the participants with initial experiences of refrigeration CDM, but can also offer those who have already undertaken the first steps an opportunity to find partners.
