Parsons Brinckerhoff designing BART seismic retrofit

The Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) has awarded a contract to Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) to provide engineering design services for a seismic retrofit project for the BART San Francisco Transition Structure (SFTS).

The project is intended to address the seismic vulnerabilities of the SFTS's principal elements by stabilizing the earth slope west of the SFTS, modifying soil properties to reduce permeability and potential for leakage, and modifying the joint details to allow for more movement.

PB will be responsible for overall management of the project as well as geotechnical and structural engineering analysis and design. Construction on the $65 million project is scheduled to begin in mid-2007 with completion slated for 2010.
