| Acciona completes ’twin tunnels’ on Milan-Naples line Acciona Infrastructure has successfully completed the twin tunnels taking the Milan-Naples high-speed railway line under the city of Bologna. The parallel tunnels, 6 kilometres long and 9.4 metres in diameter, were dug using earth-pressure balancing tunnel boring machines (EPB TBM). The work, which commenced in 2003, was a major challenge for Acciona because of its particular complexity: the tunnels' entire length is under built-up areas. The completion is a first worldwide because of the project's complexity and the speed with which it was executed. Acciona participated successfully in one the most important projects in Europe's high-speed rail, which cost 230 million euro. Advanced monitoring and measurement technology was used to provide real-time information about the movements and stresses in the earth around the tunnel boring machines. A total of 118 people worked on the project. The breakthrough ceremony, the first ever in which the two TBM's emerged simultaneously, was attended by Bologna's Mayor, Sergio Cofferati, the Alderman for Transportation, Maurizio Zamboni, and other local authorities. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Construction News :: home page |
