HDR received Honor Award for Bellevue Access Project

HDR received an Honor Award at the annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies, for its role engineering the Bellevue Direct Access Project.

HDR designed the multi-interchange project to improve access on one of the state's most heavily traveled corridors, between downtown Bellevue and Interstate 405. The key phase was replacement of the Northeast Eighth Street Bridge to make room for new high-occupancy vehicle lanes.

The project was completed a year ahead of schedule and $25 million below the $164 million budget, and benefited roadway users by avoiding lengthy road closures, reducing traffic congestion, improving safety and aiding regional economic growth.

The Bellevue Direct Access project also was recognized by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, which named the project a Pride Award winner in 2005. These awards honor excellence in community relations and public education. HDR was honored along with FHWA, WSDOT, the city of Bellevue, Sound Transit and Atkinson Construction.
