Why Architects Become Members of the RIBA?

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has commissioned its largest ever membership research programme into architects' perception of its role and effectiveness.

The research programme, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, will gain information from both RIBA members and - for the first time - non-member architects.

The RIBA has undertaken research before but this has largely relied on the voluntary - and historically low - response of members via on-line and postal surveys. There has been concern about whether the views expressed by this self-selecting group are really shared by the majority of RIBA members. It is also possible that, despite the RIBA's strong regional network, London-based members may be more audible in Portland Place than members based elsewhere.

The research will be conducted in 5 stages and will take 6 months to complete; to be completed by October 2006.
