Siemens Reduces Transit Traffic at Lake Constance

The Vorarlberg traffic control system delivered by the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group has started trial operations successfully. The aim is to reduce transit traffic on the secondary roads in the Bregenz area. To achieve this, sensors for detecting the traffic situation have been installed on the A14 Rhine Valley freeway and in the city of Bregenz. The traffic data are evaluated in a subordinate control center in Hohenems in order to determine the foreseeable traveling times for different routes.

The Rhine Valley freeway in the Bregenz area in Austria is a very busy road, especially in peak vacation periods. Many road users traveling from Germany to Austria or Switzerland also choose a route along Lake Constance and through the city of Bregenz. This causes considerable traffic congestion on the transit road. In order to alleviate the stress on local residents and shorten the traveling times for transit traffic, ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen- Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft) has made a contract with Siemens for installation of a traffic control system (TCS).

A total of ten detection systems monitor the flow of traffic in a southern direction on the A14 Rhine Valley freeway and in the city area of Bregenz. Special attention is paid to potential bottlenecks such as the Pfänder Tunnel or the City Tunnel in Bregenz. The traffic data obtained is transmitted via roadway stations to the Hohenems subordinate control center where it is evaluated. It is then possible to calculate the average traveling times for the alternative routes via the freeway or through the city on the basis of the traffic situation detected at a particular time.

A variable display panel installed at the 2.2 kilometer mark on the A96 German freeway makes this information available to vehicle drivers coming from the north. In addition, the display panel can show recommended alternative routes or warnings - for example "Pfänder Tunnel Closed". The volume of the project is around one million euros.
