Siemens to set up DHL ParcelDepots throughout Germany

DHL, the world's leading parcel and express delivery service, has awarded a contract to the Postal Automation Division of the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group for the supply of 140 ParcelDepots.

These units are to be set up throughout Germany as part of the DHL Packstation project. By using the free Packstation services, DHL customers will have the option of picking up and dropping off parcels at any time day or night without having to wait in line at service counters during normal business hours. This contract for more units follows a successful test program involving 10 Siemens ParcelDepots in Leipzig.

Each unit can hold up to 200 parcels. Whenever a consignment is placed for pickup in the ParcelDepot, the recipient is notified by SMS text or e-mail. In addition, a ParcelDepot also offers notification by voice mail or fax. This notification contains information indicating the location of the given ParcelDepot and, optionally, an identification number (PIN/TAN) allowing access to the consignment. The built-in card reader handles magnetic-strip and chip cards for cashless, electronic payment of shipping charges when dropping off a parcel or COD charges when picking one up.

From the summer of 2006 to the end of 2007, DHL will take delivery of these Packstations.
