Acciona's ’Prometeo’ project to create materials of the future

The Board of Centre for Industrial Technology Development (CDTI)approved 16 projects within the first phase of the CENIT programme, which is part of the Spanish government's INGENIO 2010 initiative. ’Prometeo’, headed by the Spanish Acciona Group, was one of the projects chosen from among the 53 candidates.

Acciona will lead ’Prometeo’ project involving 15 companies and 35 research centres in 13 autonomous regions over a period of four years. The project has a budget of over 30 million euro, half of which is in the form of a subsidy from CDTI.

The project involves questioning received wisdom in one of humanity's oldest activities - construction of living spaces. "Prometeo" will use organic and ceramic materials with the aim of improving productivity and creating business opportunities in the context of more sustainable buildings.

Research will also be conducted into how to combine and integrate the developments in new materials so as to create new structural and functional components. The project will be subject to a Life-Cycle and Cost Analysis and Optimisation process.

Early in 2004, Acciona Infrastructure began researching an innovative technology combining carbon and glass fibre, which it used to build an overpass on the Cantabria highway.
