Leighton Contractors’ Mining Division has been awarded a 5-year $330 million contract to develop the new Poitrel coal project in central Queensland owned by BHP Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd.

Work will commence at the greenfield, open-cut mine in June quarter 2006. Poitrel is 35 kilometres south east of Moranbah in central Queensland.

BHP Mitsui Coal aims to ramp up production of coking coal for export to 3 million tonnes per annum by 2009.
