HNTB receives merit award for excellence in highway design

The HNTB Corporation has been honored by the Federal Highway Administration with an Excellence in Highway Design award for its Route 21 freeway extension design.

HNTB won the Award of Merit in the Urban Highway category for this unique project, which follows through on the 1950s concept connecting Interstates 78 in Newark and 80 in Paterson, New Jersey.

The FHWA award recognizes that HNTB's highway design has resulted in traffic flowing freely between the Newark and Paterson areas, congestion is minimized and local streets are subjected to far less truck traffic.

This award marks the second national recognition by FHWA for HNTB's work on Route 21. In 2001, the firm received the FHWA's Excellence in Livable Communities Award for promoting community cohesion and blending in with local architectural styles.
