Project focuses on solar power

Councilwoman Gayle McLaughlin has announced the kickoff of the Solar Richmond Project, a nonprofit group that is committed to creating five megawatts of clean, renewable solar energy in Richmond by 2010. That would be enough to provide electricity for about 5,000 homes.

In addition to being less expensive and cleaner, the installation of solar power in homes and businesses would create jobs for Richmond residents.

The solar energy is created through solar voltaic cells that are typically placed on the roof. The cells generate electricity that can be used by the home or business, and excess energy can be sold to PG&E, thereby reducing electrical bills.
