Saudi Arabia’s North-South Railway Project

Saudi Arabia has undertaken a massive $2 billion initiative to develop a 2,300 kilometer north – south railway system that will initially link the northern mineral mines of Al Jalamid (phosphates) and Az Zabirah (bauxite) to processing facilities in Ras Azur on the Arabian Gulf.

The railroad will also be extended to serve general freight and passenger services both northerly, and to the south from Hail to Riyadh. This undertaking will require the excavation of more than 40 million tons of rock, sand and soil, as well as the construction of earthworks along the entire track length, making this the most important land transportation project ever built in Saudi Arabia.

As the leader of a multi-national consortium, including Canarail, Systra, and SCEC (Khatib & Alami), the Berger Group will provide program management and construction supervision over the next six years for the Public Investment Fund of the Ministry of Finance.
