| CH2M Hill helps reconstruct Sri Lanka CH2M Hill, a global full-service engineering, construction, and operations firm based in Denver, Colo., has been selected by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to lead a major infrastructure redevelopment effort in parts of Sri Lanka damaged by the December 2004 tsunami. The contract includes: A participatory capacity development program. This will provide the local population in affected areas with the expertise and training that they will need to succeed following completion of the construction and procurement associated with this program. Work on a new 160-meter bridge over Arugam Bay that will help encourage the return of tourism. Construction and rebuilding of vocational schools that will educate Sri Lankans on tourism and industry and insure program sustainability. Restoration and construction of three fishing harbors. Development of water treatment facilities. Coastal zone management efforts including replanting swamps and mangroves that provide protection against future tsunamis. CH2M Hill's team, 75 percent of which are local citizens, has been tasked to train Sri Lankans in modern engineering and vocational techniques, build and rebuild infrastructure with sustainability in mind. The work will be implemented in three parts through a partnership with firms including Chemonics International Inc., DevTech, Feilding Nair International, and local Sri Lanka companies including EML Consultants, Engineering Consultants LTD, Lanka Hydraulic Institute, MICDA, and UNI - Consultancy Services.
