| New professor will be named in honour of Atkins Design engineer Atkins is investing in a major link-up with the University of Greenwich via a five year, В£700, 000 sponsorship deal. The company will also offer work placements and graduate employment opportunities to university students in an initiative to recruit new talent and increase the diversity of its workforce. The funding will be used to create a new post, the Atkins Professor of Civil Engineering, which is to be advertised in February. The new professor will lead research, development and teaching in civil engineering, working with Atkins to develop industry relevant research and enterprise. The Atkins-University of Greenwich partnership has been established at a time when demand for civil engineering expertise is growing fast, notably in South East England, which is home to new developments in the Thames Gateway and the London Olympic Park. The University of Greenwich is based at the heart of this area: it has campuses at both ends of the Gateway and one within an Olympics site, River Zone. Its research and consultancy services to the civil engineering industry include large scale equipment to measure loads on concrete, which were brought into play to test the materials used to build the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The University of Greenwich has 3, 000 students studying for professional qualifications in engineering, architecture, building, surveying, design and allied occupations. Atkins is the largest multidiscipline consultancy in Europe; the largest engineering consultancy in the UK; and the fourth largest design firm in the world. Atkins has more than 5, 000 engineers in the UK, almost half of whom work within 20 miles of London. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Construction News :: home page |
