RIBA to celebrate the 2006 Royal Gold Medal

Toyo Ito will receive the Royal Gold Medal for 2006 at a formal ceremony and dinner in association with Arup at the RIBA on 15 February, at which the RIBA Honorary Fellowships and inaugural RIBA International Fellowships will also be awarded.

Given in recognition of a lifetime’s work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty the Queen and is given annually to a person or group of people whose influence on architecture has had a truly international effect.

Toyo Ito is best known for his Sendai Mediatheque in Japan (2001) and, in the UK, for the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (2002). Ito’s current work includes public and private projects throughout the world, including the Hôpital Cognacq-Jay in Paris; Relaxation Park in Torrevieja; Extension at the Fira de Barcelona; Montjuic-2 in Barcelona; and VivoCity in Singapore.

RIBA International Fellowships are presented in recognition of the outstanding work of international architects.

The RIBA’s 2006 International Fellows are:
Shigeru Ban; Peter Eisenman; Massimiliano Fuksas; Wolf Prix; Bernard Tschumi; and Rafael Viсoly.

RIBA Honorary Fellowships are awarded to men and women from a wide range of backgrounds who have made a major contribution to the field of design.

The RIBA’s 2006 Honorary Fellows are:
Zeev Aram, furniture design; Ian Callum, engineer and designer; Peter Cook, architectural photographer; James Dyson, designer; Dennis Gilbert, architectural photographer; Jonathan Ive, designer, Apple; Anne Kriken, planner, Global Office Arup New York; Mark Lawson, journalist and broadcaster; Per Lindstrand, engineer; Kester Rattenbury, teacher and journalist; John Ritblat, developer, British Land; Jorg Schlaich, German structural engineer; Simon Silver, development director, Derwent Valley Holdings; Robert Smith, quantity surveyor, Davis Langdon; Jon Snow, broadcaster; Vivienne Westwood, fashion designer.
